Hornets travelled to North Tawton RFC for the first time on Saturday hoping to repeat the victory from earlier in the season in the reverse fixture. The squad, featuring two debutants, were in high spirits following two games and a draw in recent weeks. With a mighty wind blowing directly down the pitch the first half started with the boys in green and white playing into the wind, and defending brilliantly. North Tawton we’re repeatedly pushed back, with crunching tackles coming in from all the hornets players.
However, when the discipline did slip, the referee was very hot on his whistle. This lead to a stop start game at time. Hornets conceded a converted try and two penalties in the first half, and despite this, with the wind at their backs in the second half, felt like they were in strong position to get something g out of the game.
Unfortunately the second half started with the home side going through the phases and scoring first. This was a body blow to the hornets boys but they never let their heads drop. Putting phases together they started to come back into the game, and following some I’ll discipline from North Tawton, Kyle Plummer was able to convert 2 penalties.
Newquay were unable to capitalise on Tawton being down to 12 men for a small time, but kept plugging away. As the clock ticked down Tim Grainger was able to hack a loose ball into touch in the corner. Newquay stole the ensuing line out and the pack started to drive. With the line beckoning the backs joined in and the ball was dotted down over the line. Coming up from the melee was Kyle Plummer who also kicked the conversion. However there was no time for another attack.
Hornets can’t be faulted for their endeavour, and they were unlucky a few times. A tough outing.
Next game is Penzance Amateurs at home in 26th March
