Following a weeks break, Hornets travelled up the A30 to take on WIthycombe, a team they had beaten at home earlier in the season. There were changes to the team, Jack Doswell and Chesney King returning while Brad Davies and Sam Thomas made their first starts for a while.
Newquay started strongly having the lions share of possession, attacking towards the clubhouse and making excellent inroads into the home sides defence. Following this sustained pressure, Newquay were awarded a penalty, which was kicked by Kyle Plummer. In what was an excellent advert for open rugby, with both sides were keeping the ball alive, Newquay's young wingers Tommy Rodda and Sam Thomas were attempting to attack from all over the pitch, popping up in both attacking plays and counter attack.
However, it was Withycombe who scored next, a tray either side of half time with one being converted.
Newquay heads did not drop, with the forward pack coming for heavy carries, and being marshalled around the field by Davies. The front row of Morrison, King and Bayley were on top in the scrum, and it was Bayley who crossed the line next following a long period of excellent build up play. Plummer converted and Newquay had their tales up.
Withycombe put a halt to that, winning a penalty from the kick off and from distance kicking it, to make it 10-15. This did not deter the Hornets who attacked, spreading the play to Rodda who evaded the defence and crossed the line out wide. Agonisingly the conversion hit the post, followed immediately by the final whistle.
With two tries being disallowed earlier in the game, Newquay could have been disappointed, but to come away from Devon with this result is brilliant,
Next week the boys are on the road again against North Tawton.
