Newquay Hornets RFC

(HT 0-0)

Liskeard-Looe RFC
Hornets returned home on a day of celebration for the club to face Liskeard Looe, in a game many expected to be postponed because of Storm Eunis. However, the sun shone and the game went ahead, with an excellent crowd.
Pre match the clubs sponsors and Vice Presidents had enjoyed a lunch and two special presentations. Firstly of a County Colts Cap to Aaron Simmonds and then to club President Chris Davies who this year celebrates 50 years as a Newquay Hornet.

The game started with hornets playing towards the clubhouse, and despite the early mock of possession, they managed to restrict Liskeard from leaving their own half. Hornets defence was strong both in the tight and out wide, with the players keen to put on a good display for the crowd.

The hornets back 3 of Jake Kelly, Matt Bosley and Tommy Rodda were looking good with ball in hand, and a few times were just a pass short from scoring opportunities. Newquay were finally able to make the breakthrough when, following some strong play around the fringes, the ball was passed out to the backs and quick hands lead to Matt Bosley diving in in the corner. Kyle Plummer stepped up and slotted an excellent conversion from the touch line. Sustained hornets pressure throughout the half was matched by Liskeard’s defence, until they finally gave away a penalty in kicking position, Plummer making it 10-0 at half time.

Turning around into the wind hornets knew they would be up against it, and despite some good attacking bursts, including veteran hooker Lee Pascoe almost making it to the line from a full length break, the discipline was costing them. First pascoe was sin binned for a high tackle, then minutes later debutant Liam Barkwill was shown a yellow. The hornets players showed tremendous heart and courage to hold the line and not allow Liskeatd to cross. In the final minutes of stoppage time, Liskeard we’re awarded a penalty and went for the scrum. Hornets held strong and were able to disrupt the play, leading to a Liskeard mistake anf the end of the game. Credit must go to all the hornets players, special credit to Joe Burch, who only stepped into men’s rugby in January and was flying around the field tackling everything he could, whilst Aaron McPherson was man of the match with another excellent performance
