Hornets travelled to Saltash in high spirits following last weeks excellent victory away in Devon.
On a wet and mucky day both teams started the game well, but it was Saltash who scored first. The Hornets boys were not put off, and they marched their way down the field. Following a quick tap penalty, two or three phases of play led to Aaron Simmonds putting a delightful chip over the defence that was collected by Jake Kelly to score under the posts, converted by Simmonds.
However, that was as good as the first half got for Hornets. Saltash had the bit between their teeth and scored 4 more tries in the first half to lead 31-7 at half time. The Hornets boys were fired up to begin the second half and began by being encamped int the Saltash 22. Line out ball and the rolling maul were working very well, and eventually one collapse to many leading to a penalty, that was kicked by Simmonds.
The game was really opening up, and Newquay’s back row were really stepping up, Tim Grainger in particular, was everywhere. Newquay managed to gain possession around the halfway line, and Alex Sheldon made a strong surge. More strong play led to Simmonds putting a kick to the corner, which was knocked on. From the ensuing scrum Hornets won the ball and after some strong pick and go’s, James Bayley powered over for a score, converted by Simmonds.
Newquay were becoming more prominent at this stage, and Kelly made an excellent break, with Saltash conceding more penalties. However, with the conditions worsening Hornets were unable to breach the defenses again.
The second half was much improved, and the Hornets boys can take a lot of positives into next weeks clash at home with table toppers Topsham.
There is also a Second team game at home, also against Topsham, followed by the Hornets Christmas Party.
