Match Report Sat 20/11/21
Newquay Hornets 26 North Tawton 24

North Tawton Rugby Club were the Hornets opposition for the first time in the club's history, and this was always going to be a hard-fought encounter.
The Hornets playing towards the car park end were first on the score board after 10 minutes with a well struck penalty by Aaron Simmonds, and 10 minutes later the Hornets were awarded another penalty, and again, on form Simmonds extended the lead to 6-0. With 28 minutes gone Newquay's veteran Lee Pascoe (perhaps unsure of the laws) was found guilty of a high tackle and was sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes, North Tawton stepped up the pressure and were attacking in Newquay half, and with a collapsed driving maul with bodies on the ground, a Fracas ensued and with red mist in front of a Hornet player the Referee had little option but to show the Hornets full back the Red Card with 30 minutes gone. This game was now going to get hard to defend for the Hornets, and sure enough the Tawton backs took their opportunity and scored a converted try to finish the half 6-7 up. The Hornets Kicked off for the start of the 2nd half and with good attacking they forced Tawton to lose the ball, James Bayley took the ball on, and half the Tawton pack, the ball was fed back to fly half Simmonds who kicked a neat little chip ahead for Jake Kelly to gather up on the left wing and touch down, Aaron Simmonds made the conversion look easy, for the Hornets to edge ahead 13-7. Tawton once again started attacking the Hornets half but the defence was solid and with a tackle made on the Tawton ball carrier on the half way line, the ball was lost and picked up by Hornet Josh Mares who outsprinted the opposition to touch down in the right-hand corner, the golden boot of Simmonds once again found the target and Hornets were now 20-7 in front. North Tawton retaliated once again with a converted try to make the score 20-14. Hornets immediately hit back with another penalty to stretch the lead to 23-14, this meant the Tawton boys needed at least two scores. There was about 12 minutes to go and North Tawton boys sensed they had time to win this game, they were awarded a penalty in front of the posts and were confident enough to kick for the line out, and sure enough they won their own lineout and scored a try in the corner to bring the score back to 23-19. Once again from the kick off the Hornets boys applied the pressure to North Tawton and under pressure mistakes are made, and sure enough, Tawton conceded another penalty, and Simmonds completed his scoring tally to 16 points. Score now at 26-19, North Tawton needing a converted try for a share of the spoils. With 3 minutes remaining North Tawton were encamped on Hornets five metre line and kept attacking the try line, and considering the Hornets were a man down they were defending superbly, North Tawton finally sensed a man over on the left-hand side and spun the ball wide to go over in the corner, this left the conversion to be kicked to level the score, fortunately for the Hornets the kick was missed and the final whistle was blown for a 26-24 win for the Hornets.
