This game was played by two teams very well matched, and both teams desperate for the win to move them up the table.
Liskeard were playing down the slope for the first half and were first on the score sheet after 10 minutes, Hornets made a handling error in the middle of the park and the ball was collected by a Liskeard player who made some ground and passing the ball to the right-hand side where the Liskeard winger outpaced the Hornets defence to score a converted try. the Hornets applied pressure to Liskeard and were awarded two penalties within ten minutes and both successfully kicked by fly half Aaron Simmonds to make the score 7-6. With 30 minutes gone Hornets winger Matt Bosley collected the ball on the half way mark and set of down the Right wing, he had support to the right of him with two Liskeard boys to beat, and with a smart show of the ball to the right he split the defence and was able to score close to the posts, Simmonds kicking the conversion to increase the lead to 7-13. The second half was ten minutes in and the Hornets were awarded another penalty and another accurate kick by Simmonds increased the Hornets lead to 7-16, This game was by no means was over and Liskeard were continually pressurising the Hornets half and long periods of encampment on Hornets five metre line gave the travelling spectators some concern, but the Hornets defence was superb and some great forward play by the big man at prop, James Bayley who held up the Liskeard maul on several occasions to give the Hornets the scrum, which they won, allowing them to clear their line. With 38 minutes gone in the second half it was again Simmonds to stretch the lead with a Penalty to bring the score to 7-19. Liskeard wanted the final say of the game and from the kick of applied the pressure to the Hornets and they themselves were awarded a push over try which was converted to finish the game with the score 19-14. Coaches Mark Pearson and Darral Mares complimented the whole squad for their performance, with the oldest and most experienced man on the park Dave Rich at 9 directing the Forwards well and serving Simmonds at 10 well, for a superb game.
I've also got to give a mention to our sports Physio, Donna James who was as busy as all the players on the day. I hope she has done her magic on the broken bodies so we can be as strong as possible for the forth coming game.
