Veor RFC

32 - 32

(HT 0-0)

Newquay Hornets RFC

Newquay Hornets were away to Veor for the 4th week of the league season, both sides looking for the win and no doubt looking forward to the game. It was Hornets who were playing down the slope in the first half, and within two minutes were applying pressure on Veors line when the Ref awarded a penalty to Hornets, all the Hornets supporters were shouting to take the penalty but the decision was to run the ball, Veor being the larger team were able to stop the attack but in doing so gave away another penalty and this time the Hornets kicked for the points. Some good tactical kicking from fly half Aaron Simmonds kept the Hornets in Veors half and on 12 minutes, Hornets were 6 points up. With 16 minutes gone Aaron Simmonds intercepted a Veor pass but was high tackled and the resulting penalty put the Hornets up 0-9. On 20 minutes Veor were now attacking Hornets line, and with the Hornets side adjudged of side, Veor with the heavier and dominant side in the scrums, opted for the penalty scrum and the result was a converted try making the score 7-9, Veor continued to apply pressure and on 26 minutes they took the lead with a penalty to make the score 10-9. On 28 minutes Hornets once again took the lead with another well struck penalty from Simmonds to lead 10-12. Then on 33 minutes Hornets were on Veor's 5 metre line for a scrum, and then from the ensuing ruck the Hornets No 7 Dillon Newton who was having an outstanding game crashed over for a converted try to make the score 10-19, Hornets weren't done yet and applied territorial pressure and were awarded another penalty on 38 minutes to finish the half 10-22. The 2nd half was only 5 minutes underway when Veor were awarded a penalty on Hornets 5 metre line and they opted for the scrum and with the weight advantage they drove the Hornets over the line for a converted try to make the score 17-22. The game was getting a bit heated at times and with Jack Burbidge playing a great game at 9 he was a constant thorn in Veor's side. Hornets stuck at it and with 10 minutes gone of the second half a fracas started on the Hornets 5 metre line with the result that Hornets Hooker was sent to the sin bin, Veor opted for the scrum and were rewarded with a converted try to make the score 24-22. Veor now had the advantage with Hornets one man down and continued to pressure with another penalty to make the score 27-22. It was Hornets turn to now apply to some pressure and it was Simmonds again, to reduce the deficit with the score being 27-25. From the ensuing kick-off the Hornets made a handling error which once again resulted in a Veor try from the scrummage to give them the lead by 32 points to 25, Veor could smell victory at this stage and played to their strength's keeping the ball amongst their larger forwards, Hornets continued to play with spirit and with 3 minutes remaining Simmonds kicked the ball deep in to Veor's 22 the Hornets backs gave chase but knocked the ball on giving Veor the scrum, their captain asked the Ref how much longer and the Ref said 1 1/2 minutes, the scrum was won by Veor and the ball passed back to the full back who kicked a massive up and under and the ball landed in no man's land, and as the egg bounces not to form sometimes, it was gathered by ever present Hornet Dillon Newton who ran hard at Veors defence, but was stopped on the 22, Dillon managed to get the ball out to his team mate centre Matt Bosley who was being chased down by two Veor players, but thankfully he had the skill level to chip the ball forward and gave chase to ground the ball and score the try, Simmonds added to his tally with the conversion to make the final score 32-32. Coach Ian Morgan said all the team held their heads high and never once gave up. They will face next weeks opposition Bude with confidence.
